I have received several questions regarding the wildlife in the Orlando. Understandably, people relocating to the Orlando area have more than reasonable concerns regarding the wildlife and the safety of their family and pets.
Our client Mary whom just relocated from New Jersey asked this question:
“I am relocating to Orlando for business in the fall. I have a 50lb dog. I have heard awful stories about alligator attacks on dogs, should I be worried?”

To answer Mary’s question, there are dangerous native animals such as venomous snakes, alligators, felines, bears and some insects. It is always good to be aware of your surroundings and keep an eye on your children and pets.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission offers these Florida wildlife safety tips.
- Never feed dangerous wildlife. Feeding wildlife accustoms them to humans and is a certain death sentence for bears, alligators and other species.
- Making simple accommodations will often solve the problem of marauding raccoons and other critters. Remove the free meal attractant by feeding pets indoors, installing baffles on bird feeder poles and fastening trash cans lids with rubber straps.
- Additional modifications, like constructing a bear-resistant garbage can caddy and securing compost piles, gardens and beehives behind bear-resistant electric fencing, will discourage black bears.
- Bringing pets inside at night will keep them safe from hungry predators.
- Cover possible entryways with hardware cloth to exclude squirrels, bats and other animals scouting out your home for a safe place to raise young.

When you relocate to the Orlando area consider the cost of commuting. Many people working in Orlando live twenty or thirty miles outside of the city limits and commute back and forth every day. Gas prices are right around $3.00 per gallon and once you factor in the cost of parking downtown you could be taking a big hit to your weekly budget.
Some good news if you do decide to buy a home well beyond the Orlando area is that soon the Florida SunRail will be coming through promising relief from the traffic on I-4 and rising gas costs. Having lived in other cities that had a light rail system, I think it will be a nice addition to the Orlando and Central Florida area.
Along with all of the other things you have to consider while planning your relocation, consider your commute and factor the expenses into your budget. At RNS we work with many wonderful Realtors that can help find you the right home for your budget and location.
