We’re still trudging through a quite hot summer here in Orlando, so one thing you should always prepare yourself for here is high temperatures, frequent downpour, and the occasional storm.  We are also susceptible to hurricanes (even if we’re inland, we’ve had some storms that have definitely left a mark).  Just remember if you’re going to be outdoors here, stay hydrated and try to remember to apply sunscreen.  One does not like to endure the wrath that is a bad sunburn!

Summers can be tough in Orlando, but where is it not?  The weather fairs surprisingly well compared to the rest of Florida during the summer, mostly because of being inland.  Afternoon rain and thunderstorms are common, but nothing you wouldn’t expect for the season.  What we have to look forward to is the ideal weather that transpires during Fall, Winter, and Spring!

You may not be a huge advocate of stormy summer weather, so Orlando has an almost infinite amount of indoor activities to partake in while the dark clouds pass overhead.  Once the sun shines its glowing face on Central Florida once again, enjoy the dozens of recreational areas and parks spread generously across town.

That being said, many of you Orlando “Newbies” might be wondering what is up with the weather. Yes, our weather can be absolutely gorgeous throughout the winter and spring months, but come summer and it can/will rain everyday.  It can rain in your front yard and not in your backyard. We have hurricanes, tornadoes and the lightning is most likely unlike anything you have ever experienced.

Most of our afternoon weather is due to the colliding of the western and eastern sea breezes which usually meets in the middle of the state..right over Orlando and Central Florida.

Here is some need to know Florida weather info:

1) We are the lightning capital of the United States. More people  are struck here than in any other part of the US. Do not take a shower, wash dishes, or partake in any other activity that requires using water during a storm. Many people have been struck by lightning while taking a bath. Stay away from windows. If you are caught out in a storm do not seek shelter under a tree or other tall isolated object. The best thing to do is get inside a secure building as soon as you hear thunder in the distance. Lightning often strikes long before it even rains.

2) Buy a weather radio to alert you when severe weather is approaching. Central Florida has had an increasing number of damaging tornadoes. Check Accu Weather for great local weather info.

3) If you are planning a trip to the beach and it starts raining before you get there, you don’t have to go back home. Ninety percent of the time if you just keep driving the weather will be beautiful at the beach!! Although the weather in Florida can be severe it rarely lasts long.

4) When it comes to hurricanes, you will have plenty of warning and time to prepare. My best advice to people who have just relocated to Orlando and have never experienced a hurricane is….LISTEN TO AUTHORITY. If you have been warned to evacuate your area, please listen. So many people end up in life threatening situations because they didn’t listen to the warnings. Hurricanes are extreme and can last for hours and hours. Prepare to be without electricity and water for days…even weeks. A little planning and prep goes a long way when it comes to surviving the storm and it’s aftermath. Sometimes I think about the amount of money I spend every year preparing for these hurricanes. I bought a generator after the first hurricane in 2004 because I didn’t want to suffer through the heat ever again! And now, when I fire off the generator at the beginning of the hurricane season (just to make sure it works because that would be a sticky situation if it did not) I cringe because I now have to pay $4.oo per gallon to fill it up. Besides the water, the food, the generator, the gas, the batteries, and everything else, as a homeowner you need to decide what to do with your house in the event you need to head to safer ground.  

Be sure that you have a homeowner’s insurance policy that includes coverage for home damage and floods. Your insurance company should be able to provide you with a Hurricane Preparation Guide to prepare you, your family and your home.
